Top Jobs Available in the Healthcare Industry of India

Healthcare has become one of India’s fastest growing sectors, both in terms of revenue and employment. There has been a great change in the awareness about being healthy now than ever before. Many are turning to morning walks or joining Yoga or exercising to promote and maintain physical fitness, and showing an increased awareness of health insurance etc. which is a  proof of the fact that healthcare has made its impact and is paving the way for massive expansion. The health indicators such as life expectancy (from 60 in 1990 to 70 years); maternal (560 to 174) and child mortality (160 to 47) etc. have shown substantive improvement. But the non-communicable diseases have increased to take a toll of two third of total deaths in India.

Healthcare is a diverse domain, comprising of hospitals, health insurance, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical outsourcing, telemedicine, medical tourism, and medical and surgical equipment. Indian healthcare can be categorized into two major components – public sector and the private sector.  India’s healthcare industry is predicted to be one of the fastest growing sectors and it is expected to reach $275 billion in the coming decade.

There is great diversification in the healthcare sector and the number of opportunities is growing in a boundless manner. These opportunities also include the medical technology sector and service providers. Increasing competition in the healthcare sector has lead businesses to explore latest trends and dynamics in order to have a positive impact on their businesses. This is leading to surge in requirements of well-trained professionals

With the increase in growth of the healthcare sector, there is also a simultaneous growth of employment opportunities in this field. The opportunities are no longer haphazard but are now developing and shaping into a well-structured segment. Just as healthcare is not limited to hospitals, the same way employment opportunities are not limited to hospitals. Healthcare includes jobs for software engineers in developing healthcare software and applications, jobs in the R& D for new and latest drugs, etc. All these fields are full of new and interesting career avenues offering an excellent future for those who are prepared for it.

With the expansion of the healthcare sector, new opportunities are cropping up. Now there are limitless opportunities in research and development and pharmaceutical industries, which is giving rise to different and interesting employment prospects. Now you have profiles like biomedical engineers, dental hygienists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, medical assistants, therapists, pharmacy technicians, medical sonographers, clinical laboratory technicians, radiologic technologists, health information technicians, speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, surgical technologists, phlebotomists, and much more.

Report forecasts are predicting an opportunity of over 40 million new jobs in the healthcare sector by the year 2020 with a USD 200 billion increase in revenue generation. Indian healthcare industry is on a continuous recruitment drive. The increase in the investments in this sector leading to the addition of new hospital beds, increased penetration of super specialty healthcare facilities, and increase in medical tourism, is further expected to enhance the job opportunities in this sector.
Emergency care is still in a nascent stage but with the Medical Council of India taking up Emergency Medicine as one of the specialities in the medical courses, new opportunities are cropping up in the areas of paramedics and emergency medicine.

Meanwhile, investments in the healthcare in the private sector are also increasing at a brisk pace. The healthcare sector and its allied industry such as medical and surgical appliances have taken over as one of the top destinations for foreign investment over the last few years.
The advent of technology in the healthcare sector is going to be the primary game changer. Coming years will see a massive change in the deployment of tools, such as telemedicine, home ICUs, virtual hospitals, teleradiology, hospital information systems, hospital management information systems, online, electronic medical records, etc. This, in turn, is creating another avenue for job opportunities in healthcare technology, where growth and emphasis are of huge proportions.
